Let’s, say, for the purpose of this exercise, an Aston Martin – the DBS James Bond Special model, if you like. Now, imagine that you are driving at a breakneck speed around a racetrack – a racetrack that is completely unknown to you. You are matched against competitors that are so close to you with regard to ambition and crucial expertise that you have little choice about dealing with anything else apart from keeping you and your beautiful vehicle under control. You see a vicious right-hand bend coming up and you are going too fast. Mirrors show cars to the left and right of you and both of them within two feet. They are matching your exact speed and every minute thought that you have. The bend is bellowing its way towards you like a thunderous, angry giant. You twitch the steering wheel and in the nick of time, you manage to carry out a magnificent swerve at an unbelievable speed and fire yourself through the angle to find yourself on the other side and slightly ahead of the competition. Now, accelerate – and sweat. There, you see You missed it completely. At the exact moment that you saw the right-hand bend approaching, there was also a roadside sign showing a road joining in from the left at an angle that can only be described as stupid-o-clock. We shall call this the Lesser - Followed Road – and thank Robert Frost for the privilege of even seeing it, while we are at it. At this juncture, it must be observed that it is a virtual impossibility to make that turn under these particular circumstances. Then, of course, that means that there is a finite possibility of making it – it just isn’t very likely.Max Weissman made that turn. He held his father’s hand as he died and he saw the Lesser-Followed Road on the sign that was fleeing past him. No, of course he couldn’t make that excruciatingly awful angle. Instead, he did an about-face immediately after the right-hand bend and accelerated back through the oncoming racers. You see, the first thing that Max learnt from his dying father was that the raceway wasn’t a one-way street, as he had always misunderstood it to be. The second thing that he learnt, was how to allow himself to navigate the downstream traffic and then easily make the shallow right turn into Lesser-Followed Road. What followed astounded him in every way.Max Weissman was the Oxford Physics Student that we have all waited for.Max Weissman invented Time Travel.
